Yes! let’s have Homeschool Spring Break!

So second-generation homeschooler here! And I can tell you I am feeling the spring fever! The blossoms are out, i’m putting away my winter coats, and all I want to do is explore the world that we’ve been putting off seeing because it was too cold and uninviting.

Did you know that you can get year passes to State and National Parks?

You can get access to over 1,000 National Parks all over the country for $80 https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm#CP_JUMP_5088574

And did you know that there are over 40 state parks in South Carolina alone? https://www.tripsavvy.com/state-park-entrance-passes-3362306

April for me will be a month of field trips and outside time, before it gets too hot, which i’m really excited about!

I also have the Spring-Cleaning Fever!

I have had it with collecting more books than bookcases (the forever homeschooling problem), with putting off potty training my little boy, of ignoring the high-water pants that my kids have been wearing.

Everything is going to be put to right this month. I even vacuumed out the car yesterday. It was terrifying.

But what about structured homeschooling?

It may have to take a backseat for the month of April. and that is ok. That is what springtime brings to our souls.

Here is an excerpt from the book “Don’t Overwork The Teacher” written by my fabulous mother, who raised some pretty spectacular children through homeschooling, if I do say so myself.

“Something happens in April, especially for families who have been indoors for several winter months – a powerful sense of academic lethargy!

Instead of fighting it, recognize that there is something calling us to shake up life a little before the heat of summer sets in. Our ancestors referred to this emotional call as Spring Fever, Spring Cleaning, Chasing Dust Bunnies, Beating the Rug, Celebration of New Life, Spring Planting and the list continues.

Take the month of April – yes, four full weeks – to set aside the academics part of homeschooling and tackle your house, yard, and life while you renew and revitalize your family.”

So if you are worried about giving your kids a break during April, relax and take a deep breath. Some of the most important lessons you can teach your child is in an informal teaching setting.

But if you are worried about a dip in their education, I’d love to share with you an app called Librivox.

It is completely free, and it has basically all of the classics read out loud by volunteers. You can download them and listen to classics while traveling, or have book playing while you and your kiddos go through old clothes, or books, or wash down walls.

Whatever the need you have to do with your hands and feet this Springtime, your ears can listen to some edifying classics. Because lets be honest, reading books will always be part of homeschooling because of how awesome books are!

So now there really is no reason to feel guilty to put aside the physical books and get some movement back into your homeschooling life!
