This No-Sew Superhero Cape for your preschooler is ready in less than 3 minutes!
I have a superhero that is 4. He loves dressing up like all things super. He is also not picky. Which really helps with this easy tutorial on how to make this no-sew cape in minutes, with just a pair of scissors!
How to make Capes out of old T-Shirts:
- Grab an old t-shirt. Bonus points if it has a superhero logo on it already!
- cut straight down from the neckline on both sides cutting off the sleeves, but don’t cut the collar! (this means you will be cutting two pieces – front/back – at the same time)
- Your shirt should now be in one piece, with the front fabric-collar-back fabric, still in tact.
- Cut around the edge of the collar to cut off front fabric or back fabric. whichever piece you don’t want to be part of the cape.
- You can stop here, and just slide the collar over your preschooler’s head like a shirt, and off they go! or-
- Cut the collar in the front middle to make strings to tie the cape,
- Make a cut half-way down the middle of the collar at the same place that the cape starts.
- Then cut forwards to almost the end of the string. This will double your tie-strings and allow for an easy wear.

Why would I need capes in a hurry?
Well, I’m glad you asked!
I’ve used it twice now.
The first time was for my son’s 3rd birthday party,
Which was superhero themed. Every child (and even some adults) got to have a cape and a mask (check out these cheapo felt masks!). We then made a hero obstacle course at a park and it was everything that a 3 year old with a wild imagination could hope for.
The second time was for my 3 year old’s preschool co-op.
I was in charge of the letter S for the day. So i did S-Superheroes! I just raided my ‘getting rid of’ pile of clothes, (clean, I promise!) and cut up a few the night before they came, and again ordered these masks. It was a big hit!
This no-sew superhero cape is not supposed to be high-quality or picture perfect.
That is what makes it so great!
The kids can play rough, wrestle in mud, tear it with their super powers etc,. And because it was just a repurposed T-Shirt Cape, it is no problem!
Have fun with this quick project for your preschooler. For an extra bit of love, your child could even help make it themselves if you trust them with scissors. Hehe.
