Prepare an electronic with the yodel video

Familiarize yourself with the Austrian Went Yodeling Song so you can teach it to the kids

Watch this beginner yo-yo video. It has some really great advice about how to get the yo-you to come back up. But it also has some irrelevant yo-yo tips. So as you watch it, you can decide whether you want your (probably older) kids to watch the whole video, parts of it, or if you just want to explain it to them now that you know.

welcome Activity

Have playdough out. They can make the letter Y with it.

Introducing The Letter Y

Welcome everyone, do you remember what letter we learned last time? what was it’s sound? Do you remember any of the words that start with X?

What letter are we learning about now?
let’s sing the abc song.
It’s Y!

The Letter Y is the most special letter in the whole alphabet. Why? Because it is a consonant AND it is a vowel, can everyone say vowel? vowels are the sounds we make when our mouths are open. like AAHOHHHUHHIHHEhhhyyy.Y has three sounds. when it is a consonant it makes the yeh sound. like in yellow. or it can make the same sounds as the vowel I does. it can make eye as in sky, or ih like in mystery.

you make the top part of a y by going diagonally down half way, then diagonally down the other way, then straight down the middle. the lowercase Y is a little u with a tail.

Handwriting: the letter Y

Gather everyone to the table with pens and coloring pencils or crayons, and have them practice writing uppercase and lowercase Y with this free printable, and the preschoolers can color the picture afterwards.

Yaks in Asia lesson.

Yak. Do you know what a yak is? Yaks are like really big, hairy, cows. they have giant horns and they can produce milk like cows do. They live mostly in Asia. Can you say Asia?

Asia is a really big continent. It is in-between Europe and North America, and above Australia. Yaks are strong and sturdy and can carry packs and people up cold mountains.

Optional: Read All About Asian Yaks

Yellow Yarn Yak Craft

We are going to make our very own hairy yaks by gluing something that starts with Y- it’s long like string, but thicker like rope, and soft like clothes. . .It’s Y-Yarn! But it’s not just any yarn, the color of the yarn starts with a y too! Can you guess which color starts with the Yuh sound? Yellow!

Have each child glue their yak to a construction page near the bottom. dipping one end of the yarn in glue, have them put the yellow pieces of yarn over the yaks body.

Yellow Yarn Yak Test.

Ok, now we are almost done with the whole alphabet. Y is the second to last letter! We have 3 Y words, Yellow, Yak, and Yarn. And we have to do something special with each word. Can you do it?

  1. Step 1: Color the word Yellow, Yellow, then glue it to the top of the yak page.
  2. Step 2: Trace the word Yarn, Then glue it to the top of the yak page.
  3. Step 3: Cut the 3 letters that make the word Yak, Then Glue them in order onto your yak page

Yo-Yos lesson and Activity

Another cool thing that starts with Y that came from Asia are Yo Yos!

Hand out Yo-Yos to each child. For older preschoolers, they can watch this beginner Yo-Yo tutorial

Let them play and practice with their yo-yos while you prepare snack time

Snack beginning with the letter Y

Snack beginning with the letter Y: Yogurt, Yellow Bananas, warm cornbread with butter (both yellow)

Yodeling

Do you know what yodeling is? Yodeling is a kind of singing that people like to do near the Alp Mountains, like in Switzerland or Austria.

Have you ever seen Home On The Range? (have them watch the yodel part)

Do you think you can yodel?

I’m going to teach you a yodel song.

Pull out the popsicle stick puppets and give one to each child, or let them take turns. Hold up the mountain background.

Patiently sing the song and have them hold their puppet up at the right times. Each puppet makes a noise (grr for the bear, rumble rumble for the avalanche, etc,.) that the child can call out.

Sing it a few times till they are done.

Bonus: Y- Yard Work

If you have extra time, tell them it’s time for them to learn how to take care of a yard! let them rake leaves, sweep the patio, pick up outside toys, wash slides. . . anything you can think of!

And that’s it! I hope you enjoyed the Letter Y preschool co op lesson plan. If you end up using it, I would love for you to come back and share how it went by commenting below!
