For my preschool Co Op, I created a class all about preschool words that start with Q. (includes full lesson plan)
Most of the ideas I used i found on Pinterest, and I’ll link to everything here, but putting it together is what took me ages to do. So hopefully I can save someone else HOURS of prep work, by giving you a step-by -step process for 2 hours of preschool fun with the Letter Q.
Prep Work.

Print offs for related Q Worksheets:
I got this Alphabet letter Q page from here. But I only used 3 of the pages. (2,3, and 5) And I printed those 3 for each of the students. (If I had to do it again, I would only print 1 page. That was the attention span of the little ones I was teaching)
Printed off this picture of a (baby) quail. I downloaded it first, then using wordpress, I put 4 on each paper. Then I flipped the picture, and printed it again for each child. So when I made it into popcicle stick puppets, there was one on each side.
Then I used this picture, and printed a full sized for mom.

Letter Q Words For Preschool
On Poster Board Write in BIG letters the words:
- Q-Tip
- Quail
- Quarter
- Queen
- Question
- Quack
- Quiet
- Quick
- Quest
To Buy For Your Preschool Kids (Or for kindergarten kids too):
- Glue
- Googly Eyeballs
- Feathers
- Popsicle sticks – These kinds are the best
- Poster board (1)
- Q-tips
- Paint to dip (this is PERFECT for toddlers)
- crayons or colored pencils
- A quarter for each child (for me it was $2.00 worth, so it didn’t break the bank)
- Optional Sleeping Queens (check out why I like it here)
The Night Before.
Make and cut out the Q words
Print off the quails, then cut them out.
Glue them onto the popcicle sticks, 1 on each side.
(you don’t need to cut out mom and dad quails. But you should color them)
The Day of:
Prepare to welcome your students by having the 3 Q printable papers ready around a table with q tips and paint.
Welcome
They will be tracing the alphabet letters with q tips instead of pens.
They can start as soon as they show up, you don’t have to wait for everyone to be there on time. It’s the perfect time to add in a little writing practice for those early age kids!
Show them how to use the Q tips.
The Quick, Quack, Quiet Quest
Next, bring them into the living room for the game The Quick, Quack, Quiet Quest.
Make sure you use the words on the poster board each time you say the words.
Before starting the game, this is a good time to teach about Q and U being best friends and U is always with Q. I sang just the first 3 lines of this little ditty that I found on youtube. I sang it a few times till they caught on. (the part from 7 seconds to 25 seconds).
Then I showed each poster board word and pointed out the Q and U friendship.
Quick Quack Quiet Quest
This is just a fancy way of playing the ‘hot or cold’ game.
Everyone gets to go on a QUEST to find their magic QUARTER. First, one child is chosen to QUICKLY go to the other room.
Then the other children will QUIETLY pick a place to hide the quarter.
When the child comes back in, they are to QUACK louder when they go near the hiding place, and QUACK QUIETER when they are moving away from the hiding place.
Hold up the word to the children to help them know when to quack or when to be quiet.
Do this for every child.
The children LOVED going on the quest, and of course, LOVED that they got to keep the money.
Quail Craft
Next we go back to the table, where they will color their quails and glue the feather at the top of the head (but also everywhere else on the quails. . . because, you know, they are kids) and they get to put googly eyes on them too! make sure they color both sides.
Let them bring their stick puppets back to the living room.
Now it is time to sing a few songs.
The first song is a rendition of 5 little ducks (here)
But instead, it’s (8) little quails. They all get to go away. (one side of the room, but you can still see them). Then all come back minus one, till they all stay at the far end of the room.
You are the mom quail who calls them back. You could quack at them, but I made the whloo whloo whloo sound,(more like a dove/pigeon) and the kids thought it was hilarious.
Then I held up the dad quail, and when the dad quail said whloo whloo whloo, they all come running back.
They loved it.
The other song I did was to the tune of Bingo. And I used my poster board Q words again for this song.
“There is a word that starts with Q and Quiet was it’s name-o Q-U-I-E-T, Q-U-I-E-T, Q-U-I-E-T and quiet was it’s name-o
(hold up the words as you sing)
and you can use it for all of your singing words.
Snack Time
After the songs, let them have a snack of Quackers. . . I mean crackers.
Duck Duck Goose, or Quack Quack Honk.
Last we played the game Quack Quack Honk till they were worn out. When they were ready, I pulled out the Sleeping Queens Card Game.
Queens Game
With so many young children, we didn’t play the traditional way. Mostly, they just got kings and knights, and got to turn over a sleeping queen to see who they ‘marry’.
They ooh-ed and aah-ed over the pretty queens and silly kings.
And then it was time to be picked up!
And You, my friend, are done!
bonus 20 questions game
If you need to fill more time, pull out the Question poster word, and have them guess an animal by asking questions. There is nothing that 3/4 year olds love to do more than to ask a billion questions.
