Introducing The Letter B

Hello everyone! Do you remember the letter we learned last time? A? what 2 sounds does it make? a and ah.

Today we have a new letter, do you know what letter comes next? B! (sing the abc song). B has a sound too it is buh. can you say buh? B can make lots of words, can you think of any words that start with b? Baby bumblebee big bear, bright basket etc. B can look like 2 different letters. there is this B. (holds up B paper and uses finger to outline the B, or writes it on the chalkboard) that is one line down, and two circles on top of each other. And there is this b, which is one line down and only one circle on the bottom. The Big B with two circles is called the uppercase, or capital letter, and the smaller b, with only one circle is called a lowercase b. It’s like one is the mom and the other is it’s b-baby!

Do a b/B craft

Blow up balloons, and with markers, have them try to follow your instructions of writing upper and lower case bs on the balloon.

Handwriting the letter B

OK, now that we have practiced on the balloons, its time to practice writing the letter Bs on a real paper!

Have them give you their balloons, and set them away so they can take them home, and send them to the table to do handwriting on the coloring B page.

Story time with letter book (berensteins B Book) try to read it as fast as you can. And point out how many b words are in it.

Snack Time: Banana Bread

If the bread is not done, or you decided not to go with fresh baked banana bread, here are some other options for snacks.

Option 1. Make ‘banana bread’ with them by cutting bananas (or even buying banana chips) spreading peanut butter (or softened cream cheese), and honey (from BEES) on a slice of bread, and having them add the bananas on top, maybe with cinnamon dusting the top.

Option 2. Brownie Bites

Option 3. Baked beans. . .Just kidding. . . but then again, you never know with kids what they’ll eat.

Option 4. (graham) Bears with milk. (gummy bears?)

Option 5. Berries and whipped cream.

Animal Science Lesson On B-Bees

Using the Bee Visual packet, show the pictures while telling the story of bees.

Bees are really special animals. they make a buzzing sound. Can you sound like a bee? Bees make Honey. Is honey yummy? I love honey.

Do you know what bees live in? Yes, they live in a beehive! Does your home look like your friend’s home? Nope, just like that, there can be many different looking hives. They can be in trees, on the ground, and some are even specially made by beekeepers.

And there are different kinds of bees. The most important bee is the momma bee. She is called the queen bee because she is the ruler over all the other bees.

Here are the worker bees who have a bunch of different jobs. Some help take care of the baby bees called larvae, They are in the nest called a comb. And there are other bees that store the honey in other combs. . . those are honey combs.

We mostly see the worker bees that go out to get the pollen, nectar, and water. Have you ever seen a bee gathering pollen to help make the honey? Do you know where they get the pollen and nectar? From flowers! and the flowers LOVE to give the pollen to the bees, did you know that? It actually helps the flowers grow into more flowers! and do you remember learning about apples? Apples started out as flowers, so we want the bees to help make more flowers, because that means more apples to eat!

You want to hear something gross? Bees mix nectar with their spit, and that is what honey is made out of! So you’ve eaten bee spit! (For adults who want to know how honey is actually made)

Bees also gather water to drink and to cool the beehive. Do you like being really really hot? Bees don’t either. Bees were the first animals to invent air conditioning. They make their wings pump water and air around the hive to keep their air conditioning going throughout the hot summers.

The bees make lots and lots of honey, and there are brave people called beekeepers who get the honey from the bees and put it in a bottle, and let us buy it at the store!

If they just tried to get the honey from the bees, the bees would chase them off. So they use a sleeping mist that makes the bees tired. The beekeeper can then lift these lids of honeycomb, gather the honey, slide the lids back, and put it in a jar that we can eat. If you ever see a beekeeper, thank him for all the honey you’ve tasted! But don’t worry, the beekeepers make sure they leave enough honey for the bees to eat too.

Don’t Forget to taste the Banana Bread or send some home at the end If They Haven’t Yet!

Optional Ending Game Beginning With The Letter B: Basket-Ball

“Basket-ball” grab baskets, split the kids into two groups. have a line down the middle. The kids have to throw balls, stuffed animals (teddy bears?) or balloons, or all of them, into the other person’s basket. If it misses, the kids can go anywhere on their side and pick up the balls and try to throw them into the baskets. the game ends when all of the items are in baskets (they can’t take out and throw balls that are already in the baskets) then count and see which basket has the most points!

Bonus Songs and r=Rhymes with Letter B:
